Standard Volunteers Role Descriptions

Volunteer Services Role

Volunteers will support the execution of the volunteer program for all event volunteers. This position includes a range of volunteer activities including clothing distribution, volunteer check-in, administering daily draws, lounge supervision and being a central source for event information. Volunteer Services are also responsible for food and beverage services and will have role assignments for training & orientation as well as the volunteer celebration. Volunteers in this position will be based out of the Volunteer Lounge which may not be located in the competition venue.

Accreditation Services Volunteer Role

Volunteers will work in the accreditation center and will need to be computer and tech savvy as well as comfortable collecting information, handling photo verification, and printing and distributing accreditation. This position starts prior to event. Volunteers will help with volunteer accreditation distribution during volunteer training and all accreditation needs in December 2024. Volunteers in this position will be based out of the accreditation office which may not be in the competition venue. Accreditation needs are most robust in this committee at the beginning of the event, lessening as the event progresses. Volunteers should expect to have unpredictable surges of requests during the day followed by lulls.

Transportation Volunteer Role

Volunteers will drive event delegates such as team staff, VIPs and media between host hotels and competition venues. Vehicles will be SUVs supplied by the championship with periodic requirements for volunteers to drive cube trucks for equipment transfers and greet airport arrivals. Individuals applying to work in transportation will be required to submit a driver's abstract and have a valid license.

Medical Volunteer Role

Medical positions required throughout the tournament include Doctors, Orthopedic Surgeons, Dentists and Therapists. All Medical roles will report directly to the Chief Medical Officer.

Off-Ice Official Volunteer Role

Off-ice officials include penalty box attendants, score clock operators, score keepers and statisticians. Statistics and scoring will be tracked using the IIHF statistics software package. People in this role will be required to have experience working in or volunteering in similar roles and must be willing to learn new technologies and adapt to IIHF game protocols.

Team Services Volunteer Role

Volunteers will provide front-line support for the teams at the competition and training venues. Volunteers will assist in dressing room set-up by stocking beverages, equipment supplies, and snacks. They will assist in the coordination of team laundry and equipment transfers. This is an all-hands-on-deck, do-anything-to-ensure-success kind of role. Previous experience assisting teams in a similar capacity is preferred.

Game Operations

Volunteers will work with the game operations team to help execute in-stand and on-ice intermission activations. Their responsibilities may also include, finding activation participants, engaging fans, helping to guide fans and event guests to their required participation area, and ensuring prizing is organized and on hand for each giveaway. Volunteers will also support promotional item giveaways either at door opening or closing. Volunteers will assist in ceremony execution (opening, closing, player of the game, flag-raising, and flag-bearer kids). Duties will include greeting event partners upon arrival at the venue and escorting them to the ceremonies waiting room, as well as ceremony preparation and set-up.

Fan Experience Volunteer Role

Volunteers will help guide fans and event guests and ensure that all of their needs are effectively met. Duties may include but are not limited to: welcoming, hosting and answering all questions to the best of their capability; referring guests to appropriate stations, help manage information desks at the various and venues, support activations at fan fest, and other ancillary events to the tournament. Volunteers may be working on set-up, tear-down and execution of Fan Zone activities. Volunteers may be required to work outdoors.

Street Team

Volunteers will help guide fans and event guests and ensure that all of their needs are effectively met. Duties may include but are not limited to work at various potential information kiosks throughout the city leading up to the event. During the event volunteers may be working on set-up, tear-down and execution of Fan Zone activities. Volunteers may be required to work outdoors.

Media Services Volunteer Role

Volunteers will support all media operations throughout the venue. This position includes a range of media activity including media workroom, press box, broadcast, mix zone and statistics distribution. Individuals prepared to learn the ins and outs of media operations and work in a fast-paced environment will find this role suited for them.

50/50

Volunteers will support the 50/50 program through the selling of 50/50 tickets from the time the doors open until mid-2nd intermission. Ability to handle money and sell.

Security (Access Control)

Volunteers will support the coordination and execution of the strategic day to day operations of the Security Task Force as it relates to competing teams, on-ice officials, arena venue, hotel venue, VIPs and heightened security within identified areas. Check accreditations to ensure only those accredited individuals gain access to the restricted areas.

VIP Program

Volunteers will manage the VIP lounge by looking after set-up and tear-down, gifting distribution, the VIP info desk, access control, coat check, and food and beverages. Volunteers will welcome and host VIPs.

Venue Operations

Volunteers will support event operations across all divisions and venues. Volunteers needs to be flexible and dynamic for this position. Volunteers will need to be available prior to the event starting (mid-December) and when the event is over (early January). Volunteers will support the warehousing and logistics of the event operations. A keen attention to detail during shipping, receiving and scheduling is ideal for this role.

Volunteer Photographer

Volunteers will take photos leading up to and during the event. Prior photography experience at sporting events is preferred, and having access to equipment is required. All photos will be submitted to Hockey Canada post-event.

Registration FAQ's

Q: What is the time commitment required to volunteer?

A: All volunteers need to be prepared to commit a minimum of 30 hours in shifts over the course of the event. Shift length may vary from five hours (minimum) to eight hours, depending on the role.

Q: Why is my volunteer offer only conditional?

A: Volunteer offers are conditional upon the successful completion of the screening process. All volunteers will be required to complete a criminal record check and sign the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport consent form. Some volunteer positions may require additional security screening depending on the requirements of the positions (e.g. driver’s abstract). Volunteers will be provided with the information required to complete the security screening(s) once they have accepted their volunteer offer.

Q: What if I need to withdraw from the process?

A: We understand that things come up in life and you may need to cancel. We ask that you notify us as soon as possible to withdraw your application by emailing [email protected].

Q: Is training mandatory?

A: Applicants who receive and accept a volunteer offer must attend the training and orientation session. This is to ensure they are best prepared for their volunteer duties. Volunteers will also receive online training material prior to the training sessions.

Q: When will I receive my uniform and accreditation?

A: Volunteer uniforms and accreditation will be distributed prior to the event. Details will be provided to selected volunteers in November 2024.

Q: Will accommodations be provided for volunteers?

A: Accommodations will not be provided; volunteers are responsible for their own accommodations, if required.

Q: Is there an age requirement for volunteers?

A: All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age as of November 1, 2024, and those wishing to volunteer in a driving capacity must be 25 years of age or older.

Q: Is it possible to volunteer, even if I don’t reside in Canada?

A: Yes! Nationality or place of residence is not important, but please note that travel expenses and accommodation requirements are at the expense of the volunteer. We recommend you refrain from making arrangements until you receive a volunteer offer in order to confirm your position as a member of the volunteer team. You will also be required to submit a criminal record check from your country of origin or residence in either English or French.

Q: How do I update my volunteer profile?

A: If you have had a change in information, such as updated contact information, we need to know! Please ensure the information you have provided on your volunteer profile is always up to date. It can be accessed here, and you will be required to enter the username and password you created during registration. If you can’t recall that information, please email us at [email protected].

Q: Where is the best place to get information on the World Juniors?

A: Hockey Canada’s 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship website (HockeyCanada.ca/WorldJuniors) and social media channels (@HockeyCanada) will always have the most up-to-date and inclusive information on. Be sure to check them regularly to stay informed on all things World Juniors.

Q: When will I receive a detailed schedule of my shifts?

A: Volunteer schedules will be published on your volunteer profile in November 2024. Schedules are made according to volunteer availability and event needs. Please ensure your availability is up to date in your volunteer profile.

Q: Will I be able to watch World Juniors games as a volunteer?

A: Volunteers may use their uniform and accreditation to access their roles and event venues, only when scheduled to be on shift. Outside of their volunteer commitment, volunteers are invited to purchase their own tickets to take in the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship.
