PEI CLINCHES FIRST IN ROUND-ROBIN OF ESSO NATIONALS Charlottetown, PEI – Team Prince Edward Island has clinched first place in the senior women’s team pool of the 2008 Esso Women’s Nationals. PEI defeated Nova Scotia 3-1 on Wednesday evening for the team’s second-straight win at the event. PEI, with six points, cannot be caught with one day of round-robin action remaining. PEI was once again led by its goaltender, Diana Benell (Webster Cove, PEI/Cornwall, IWHL), who made 40 saves on 41 shots for the win. The club got two goals Amanda Armstrong (Cobourg, PEI/University of PEI, CIS) and Kelsey O’Donnell (Souris, PEI/University of PEI, CIS). Nova Scotia’s lone goal was scored by Zoë Launcelotte (Halifax, NS/Saint Mary’s, CIS). Nova Scotia, which lost its second straight, remains with one point, earned during its 4-3 shootout loss to New Brunswick on Tuesday. Team PEI has delighted the large crowds that have come to support the team through two days at the Esso Women’s Nationals. The CARI Complex, which has played host to the games thus far, has been filled for PEI’s games. On Thursday, Manitoba takes on Nova Scotia and New Brunswick faces PEI in the final games of the round-robin of the senior women’s championship.
