2004 ESSO WOMEN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

TEAM ONTARIO CAPTURES THE ESSO WOMEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

SHERWOOD PARK, AB – The 2004 Esso Women’s National Hockey Championship wrapped up with a thrilling championship final game that needed overtime to determine a winner, as Team Ontario defeated Team Alberta 2-1 in front of a capacity crowd of 1,800 fans at Sherwood Park Arena to capture the Abby Hoffman Cup.

Geraldine Heaney scored the winning goal for Team Ontario at 3:39 of the first overtime period, to finish off a spectacular rush.

The Team Ontario Player-of-the-game honours went to Annie Desrosiers, while Hayley Wickenheiser took the honours for the Team Alberta. » more

 

EDMONTON CHIMOS WIN BRONZE

The host team – Edmonton Chimos edged out Team Quebec in a thrilling 4-3 victory. Both teams came out flying in the first period exchanging two goals a piece. Team Quebec took a 3-2 led into the final frame, but the home town team was not to be denied. With just over 10 minutes to play, Danielle Walz tied things up at 3-3, much to the delight of the home town crowd. With the bronze medal hanging in the balance, Karrah Stephan scored the go ahead goal for the Chimos with 4 minutes remaining. The two teams put on a great performance before a crowd of 1014 fans. The Player of the game for Team Quebec was Chantal Lampron, while Danielle Walz took home the honours for the Edmonton Chimos. Edmonton Chimos captain, and long time female hockey icon, Jane Lagace, announced her retirement at the conclusion of today’s game.

The tournament features members of Canada's National Women's Team and Canada's Under-22 National Team, as well as players who have participated in the Canada Winter Games and the National Women's Under-18 Challenge. This year's tournament features 10 teams from nine provinces competing for the coveted National Championship title.
