In November 2001, The University of Winnipeg iced its second season of women’s hockey. The team played approximately 45 exhibition games against other university women’s teams, senior women’s AA teams, high school boys teams and participated in two tournaments. The goal of our program was to compete at the Provincial Championships and have an opportunity to represent the Province of Manitoba at the Esso Women’s National Championship in Renfrew and Arnprior, ON in March 2002. The team was successful at Provincials and looks forward to the week of competition here at Nationals. Women’s hockey is the country’s fastest growing sport. Given the popularity and media coverage of women’s hockey and the increased profile of women’s sport in general, we are excited about the future of the program. The University of Winnipeg is very proud of the accomplishments the program made in two short years. The program is lead by head coach Jill Mathez, and assistant coaches Mark Miller and Tony D’Angelo and Director of Operations Lisa Haley. Our support staff includes Patrick Townley, Greg vanLeeuwen and Erica Wilson. The team would like to thank Hockey Manitoba as well as the organizing committee for all their hard work and wish other competitors the best of luck in the Championship.
