Sweden 8 - Germany 2

MYRÉN’S FOUR GOALS LEAD SWEDEN TO BIG WIN OVER GERMANY IN PRE-TOURNAMENT GAME

Klara Myrén scored four times and added two assists as Sweden used a six-goal second period to blow open a tight game and cruise to an 8-2 win over Germany on Saturday night in a 2008 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship pre-tournament game at the Olympic Oval in Calgary.

Myrén scored three of her goals in the big second period, and finished the frame with five points before rounding out the scoring with a late goal as the Swedes rebounded from a pair of one-goal deficits.

Despite being outshot 12-5 in the first period, it was the Germans who scored the lone goal of the opening 20 minutes, as Maike Hanke connected just past the six-minute mark.

Myrén got her team even just 53 seconds after the second period’s opening face-off, scoring shorthanded, but Anja Weisser restored the German lead with a goal on the same powerplay – the last of Germany’s offence for the night.

Once again it was Myrén who tied the game for the Swedes, and once again it was a shorthanded marker, and she helped set up the go-ahead marker by Emma Holmbom just over two minutes later on a Swedish powerplay, giving the Scandinavians their first lead of the game.

The Klara Myrén Show continued at the 15:39 mark of the second period as she completed her hat trick, and Tina Enström and Cecilia Östberg found the back of the net in the closing minutes of the period to give Sweden a commanding 6-2 lead heading into the intermission.

Enström and Myrén rounded out the scoring in the third period for Sweden, who outshot the Germans 42-25.

Both teams open the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship on Monday night – Sweden faces Switzerland at Norma Bush Arena at 4:00 p.m. MT, while Germany meets Finland at Norma Bush Arena at 7:30 p.m. MT.
