CALGARY, AB – Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team tuned up for the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship with a dominating performance Saturday night, outshooting Switzerland 77-5 in a 15-0 win.

Chelsea Karpenko (Winnipeg, MB) led the way with two goals and three assists, while Tara Watchorn (Newcastle, ON) chipped in with a goal and three helpers.

The Canadians jumped out to a quick lead on the Swiss, as Leslie Oles (Beaconsfield, QC) swept to the net and tucked the puck past goaltender Sophie Anthamatten, who would be in for quite a night, just 30 seconds in.

Oles scored again with just 24 seconds to go to round out the scoring in the opening 20 minutes, and Watchorn and Audrey Belanger-Cournoyer (Montreal, QC) scored in between to give Canada a 4-0 lead heading to the intermission.

The offence struck another five times in the middle frame, with Laura McIntosh (Waterloo, ON) leading the way with a pair of goals, and Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, ON) adding a goal and assist.

Canadian goaltender Amanda Mazzotta (London, ON), who faced just one shot, gave way to Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, MB) midway through the second period.

After facing 55 shots in just 40 minutes, Anthamatten was relieved by Jessica Müller in the Swiss goal to start the third period, but Müller fared no better, allowing six goals on 22 shots.

Karpenko and Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC) scored 22 seconds apart early in the third, Karpenko and Carolyne Prevost (Sarnia, ON) scored 45 seconds apart midway through, and Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, QC) and Laura Fortino (Hamilton, ON) connected 42 seconds apart in the dying minutes as Canada got at least one point from 16 of their 18 skaters in the win.

Canada kicks off the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship on Monday night, when they face the Czech Republic at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. The puck drops at 7:45 p.m. MT, and all the action can be seen via webcast at www.hockeycanada.ca.
