2002 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship

Game Summary

April 30, 2002
Karlstad Sweden

Team USA scored the first goal of the game late in the first period and then tried to sit on the lead the rest of the game. It was a plan that ultimately backfired, and Canada rallied with two third-period goals to pull out a 2-1 win and win first place in the Group D standings. This sets up a Canada-Germany game in two days' time to begin the Qualifying Round. The USA will now open against Switzerland. Both games will be held here at Karlstad.

"It was an exciting game," Canada's Manny Malhotra said afterward. "It's what you would call a character builder. They were ahead all game, but we kept grinding it out and sticking to our game plan."

"I thought we carried the play for two periods, but they outplayed us in the third. Their goalie made some great saves for them and it was a very good hockey game," Ted Donato offered.
