Everyone knew Finland had solid goaltending with Tomi Karhuten. They just didn’t think it would come from backup goalie Harri Sateri too.

A third-period display of robbery by Saterti, not seen since Billy the Kid, gave Finland a a 3-3 draw with Team West Wednesday in exhibition play at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

The Finnish goaltending tandcm faced 52 shots, many of them from point-blank range.

“We came out throwing some rubber around,” said West defenceman Keith Aulie.

Karhuten said he liked playing on the smaller North American ice surface, as it gave him a chance to stay sharp throughout the contest.

“It is the Canadian style to fire a lot of shots,” Karhunen said.

Team West coach Del Pedrick said his team had enough quality chances to win the hockey game.

“(Sateri) was certainly stronger than (Karhunen). Boy qwe had a lot of opportunities. We missed the chances we should bury. You have to give him credit. He sure did step up.”

About seven minutes into the first frame, West found its stride and flooded Finnish goalie Tomi Karhunen with shots.

West used a power-play to open the scoring. Joel Broda worked the puck down low in the Finnish zone, fed Nathan Green in the low slot, who fired the puck past goalie Tomi Karhunen for the game’s first goal at the 9:50 mark. Jason Gregoire picked up the other assist.

Keeping the pressure on, Dustin Cameron took a rebound and with a nifty move, backhanded a shot past Karhunen 41 seconds after West’s first goal. Brett Plouffe and Jeremy Schappert chipped in assists.

Finland rebounded from its poor first period outing with a strong second period. Joonas Jarvinen fired a point shot through traffic for his first goal of the tournament at 2:22. Roopertti Mertikainen and Mikael Paunio added assists. They could have tied the game on a penalty shot 32 seconds later but Olavi Vauhkonen’s deke attempt failed.

Instead, West made it a 3-1 game at the 6:42 mark of the second. Brett Breitkreuz fired a shot from the top of the hash marks, with assists going to Jay Fehr and Plouffe.

Penalty troubles continued to plague West, and that led to a second Finnish power-play goal 7:32 into the second frame. Jaako Jaaksela found some open ice in the low slot, and beat West goalie David Aime between his legs, making it a 3-2 game.

In the third period, Finland tied the game at three on a deflected shot. Niko Kluuskeri was credited with the goal, assisted by Antti Tyrvainen and Aki Kangasmaki at the 4:46 point of the third.
