2012 TELUS Cup

Red Deer Rebels 10 - Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves 3

REBELS RACK UP 80 SHOTS, ROUT WOLVES TO FINISH UNDEFEATED

LEDUC, Alta. – Brady Bakke, Scott Ferguson and Ty Mappin all scored twice as the Red Deer Rebels finished off an undefeated preliminary round at the 2012 TELUS Cup with a convincing 10-3 win over the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves on Friday morning.

It’s the second time in six years the Rebels have hit double digits in a game at the National Midget Championship – Red Deer beat the St. John’s Maple Leafs 10-0 at the 2007 tournament, when it hosted.

Jonathan Finnigan, Rory Davidson, Dylan Thudium and Kolton Dixon – with his first goal of the season – also scored for Red Deer (3-0-2), which fired a remarkable 80 shots at Sudbury goaltenders Maxim Veilleux and Andrew Lefebvre and scored five times on the power play.

The Rebels can finish no lower than second in the standings, and could take top spot if Leduc beats Collège Esther-Blondin in the preliminary finale on Friday afternoon.

Steven Green, Ryan Erickson and Scott Sirkka scored the goals for Sudbury (0-5), which was outscored 34-11 in its five losses. Lefebvre stood tall in the Wolves goal, stopping 68 of 76 shots after taking over for Veilleux just three minutes in.

While Sudbury’s season is done, Red Deer will wait for the outcome of Friday’s final two preliminary round games to find out when it will play its semifinal on Saturday, and against whom.
