CALGARY, Alberta – Hockey Canada has hired Stephen Brooks as the organization’s chief financial officer and senior vice-president of finance, following an extensive recruitment process that began last fall.

Brooks joined Hockey Canada in an interim capacity in July 2023 and, with the approval and support of the transition Hockey Canada Board of Directors, played a critical role in modernizing and restructuring the organization’s fund structure to align with the recommendations of the independent governance review led by the Hon. Thomas Cromwell, C.C.

“Stephen is a terrific addition to Hockey Canada’s leadership team,” said Katherine Henderson, president and chief executive officer of Hockey Canada. “His experience and expertise have already provided tremendous value to our organization, and he has been pivotal in our efforts to increase and ensure our financial transparency, which we hope will set the standard for governance of national sport organizations moving forward.”

“As a parent to two young hockey players and lifelong fan of our national winter sport, I am thrilled to join Hockey Canada and support the ongoing transformation of our organization,” said Brooks. “Hockey Canada has such an important connection to families and fans throughout the country, and as we continue to work towards financial stability, we know that it must happen through transparency and accountability.”

After 10 years in public practice with Deloitte in Vancouver and New York, Brooks spent 12 years with Rogers Communications Inc. and the Toronto Blue Jays, including five seasons as senior vice-president of business operations of the Blue Jays beginning in 2011.

During his time with the Blue Jays, the club returned to the postseason for the first time in over 20 years, experienced significant increases in attendance and revenue, launched a redesigned logo and brand to support its national presence and introduced several prominent community marketing initiatives, including the Winter Tour.

Brooks has worked as chief financial officer with public- and private-sector companies, including Senators Sports & Entertainment, where he was a key participant in the successful negotiations to move the team’s American Hockey League franchise to Belleville, Ontario, in 2017.
