TOP REGULAR SEASON TEAM – BATTLEFORDS NORTH STARS
Back to back. The Battlefords North Stars rode the best defence in SJHL history to a second consecutive regular season championship, posting 48 wins in 58 games. The North Stars lapped the field in the Olympic Buildings Division for the second year in a row, going a combined 21-1 against Humboldt, Kindersley and Notre Dame to finish with a 33-point lead; over the last two seasons, Battlefords is a ridiculous 41-1-1 within its own division. While the offence was very good, finishing third in the league with 223 goals, it was the defence that turned heads; the North Stars allowed just 103 goals, an average of 1.78 per game, and the lowest total in SJHL history. Taryn Kotchorek and Joel Grzybowski were a dynamic duo in goal – they finished one-two in GAA (1.61 and 1.66) and combined for 11 shutouts, while both posting save percentages north of .930. Coby Downs (29-43—72) and Layne Young (27-44—71) were the unquestioned leaders up front, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively in SJHL scoring. Both cracked the top 10 for the second year in a row.
