Your time is one of the most valuable things that you can give. The 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship host committee is currently seeking volunteers to help out when the top women’s hockey players from across the globe take to the ice next April in Ottawa. An incredible 800 volunteers are needed to help make this exciting event a huge success!

Volunteering with the world championship offers a number of awesome opportunities, including a behind-the-scenes experience and the unique chance to be part of an international tournament featuring teams competing from Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.

The objective of Hockey Canada, in partnership with the host committee, is to hold the most successful event in IIHF history. The plan is to leave all participants with the satisfaction that they have been given an infrastructure to enable them to be at the top of their game and showcase both the strength of their team, and the sport of female hockey in general, said Fran Rider, 2013 WWC vice-chair and president of the Ontario Women's Hockey Association.

Volunteers are more than just support staff; they are a pivotal part of the world championship team. Sign up now for the experience of a lifetime!

This is a rare chance for YOU to be part of an international event that was lasted hosted in Ottawa more than two decades ago. The inaugural IIHF Women’s World Championship was held in Ottawa in 1990.

Liz Warren, a volunteer from the 1990 tournament said, “It was one of the best weeks of my life. Team U.S.A. gave me one of their official jerseys and a bag. It was an awesome experience; one that I will never forget.”

Volunteering for the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship is a certainly great way to spend your spare time, and is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson said, "The players have just gotten so much better and the competition is getting better around the world – 1990 is very special in the history books, but 2013 is going to be really exciting to be back in Ottawa for the second time and the final (women’s worlds in) preparation for the 2014 Olympics."

It was after the 1990 IIHF Women’s World Championship that women’s hockey really saw an increase in popularity. The success of the tournament led to a huge spike in enrolment in the sport. This year, in Canada, there are more than 85,000 women enrolled in organized hockey leagues.

The IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship takes place every year, with the exception being Olympic years, drawing in thousands of fans locally and across the globe. The tournament takes place over eight days and will be held at two separate locations, SBP Arena, home of the Ottawa Senators, and the Nepean Sportsplex.

Volunteers for the tournament are needed for many different positions. These positions include assisting with social media, security, registration, and hospitality, among many others.

A tournament of this magnitude is not possible without volunteers. A case in point was in 2009. when Ottawa hosted an extremely successful IIHF World Junior Championship. The tournament drew in 453,282 attendees, which were handled graciously by 1,000 volunteers.

Volunteer for the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship, and be a part of something extraordinary! We need your help and enthusiasm to make this year’s tournament the most successful world championship in history!
