CALGARY, ALTA -- Goaltender Sean Burke, right winger Owen Nolan and defenceman Don Sweeney have agreed to play for Team Canada at the 1997 World Hockey Championship in Finland from April 26-May 14, Canadian Hockey announced Thursday.

Team Canada general manager Bob Clarke also confirmed the addition of forward Bob Errey of the San Jose Sharks to Canada's World Championship team. All four players will be joining Team Canada in Winnipeg today or Friday for the mini-training camp being held there before the team leaves for Finland on Monday.

Burke, a former of Canada's National Team, will be participating in his fourth World Championship for Canada. He played on the 1987 team that finished in fourth place, on the 1989 team that won a silver medal in Stockholm, and on the silver medal-winning team that competed at the 1991 World Championship, also in Turku-Helsinki.

Burke also played for Canada at the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary and helped Canada win a silver medal at the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville, France. It will be the first World Championship appearances for both Nolan, of the San Jose Sharks, and Sweeney, a member of the Boston Bruins.

The additions mean that Clarke has named 22 players to the World Championship roster, which has a limit of 23 players. One spot will be left open to be filled by a player selected from among the NHL teams that are eliminated in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The team is being selected and managed by Clarke, Bob Gainey, the Dallas Stars GM, and Pierre Gauthier, GM of the Ottawa Senators. The three GMs also will manage Team Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

Canada's World Championship entry will be coached by Andy Murray, head coach of Canada's National Team, along with assistants Mike Johnston, who is associate coach and GM of the National team, and Wayne Cashman, assistant coach of the San Jose Sharks. The club opens a mini-camp on Thursday in Winnipeg to prepare for the World Championship, and Team Canada will play two pre-tournament games at the Winnipeg Arena on April 19 and 20 before flying to Finland.

Also joining Team Canada during the Winnipeg mini-camp will be full-time National Team members Brett Clark, Steve Junker, Jason Young, Ryan Duthie, Brad Chartrand, Jimmy Roy and Reid Simonton.

Canada, which has won the World Hockey Championship 19 times since 1920 -- the last gold medal in 1994 -- opens the tournament in Turku on April 26 against Norway.
