More than 1,000 players have competed for their provinces since the first National Women’s Under-18 Championship in 2001. On the eve of the 10th edition of the event, 10 players reflect on their outstanding performances.

#8 – Stefannie Moak (Atlantic, 2011)

Her numbers: 2-1-0, 1.69 GAA, .956 SV%, 1 SO

Her story: After a 33-save shutout of Saskatchewan in her team’s opener, Moak turned aside 44 of 46 shots two days later against Ontario Blue to lead perennial underdog Atlantic to only its third playoff appearance in tournament history. She made 31 more saves in the bronze medal game loss to Manitoba. All told, in her three starts she made 108 saves, more than any other goalie that year.

In her own words: “The game against Ontario Blue [still stands out]. Ontario’s well known for having good teams and they obviously had two teams in that tournament, so coming out with a win against Ontario Blue was something that was very exciting at the time.”

“There’s no better feeling when you’re facing that many shots. You kind of get this game high when you’re in the zone and you get into a mindset that you’re not letting anything past you. I feel more involved in the game – facing that many shots makes it a real fun and intense game to play.”

“We were underdogs, but just because that’s the traditional role that we had played in previous tournaments. We were also still very aware that we could compete at that level. We were ready to surprise everyone. I think each year is a unique year and we approach it a little bit different every time. I thought that year we had a really good group and we knew we could compete with the other provinces so we were really excited to get the tournament going. The community within Maritime hockey was not small, but you do get to know the girls ahead of time. It’s a really supportive community from different provinces coming together.”
