Jennifer Botterill scored the lone goal for the Canadians, who settled for silver for the second year in a row at the world championship. Botterill’s goal tied the game early in the second period before the Americans scored the game’s final three goals.

Caroline Ouellette’s second-period goal was the winner as Canada topped the Americans in a gold medal game preview. Jennifer Botterill also scored, while Canadian veteran Jayna Hefford earned her 200th international point, the third Canadian to do so.

Kim St-Pierre made 15 saves for her second shutout in as many starts as Canada kicked off the playoff round with a blanking of the host country. Jennifer Boterill scored twice for the Canadians, while Marie-Philip Poulin chipped in with a goal and two assists.

 

IIHF SAYS ONE REFEREE ENOUGH FOR WOMEN’S GAME

Next year's Olympic men's hockey final in Vancouver will have two referees while the women's gold-medal game will likely just have one. And according to the International Ice Hockey Federation, that's the way it should be, at least for now. » more

Carla MacLeod scored once and added four assists as Canada wrapped up a perfect preliminary round with a win over Sweden. Seven different players scored goals and 13 had at least one point, while Kim St-Pierre made 18 saves for the shutout in the Canadian goal.
