Kellar Scores Two Goals As Canadian; Women Beat Finland 7-4
HELSINKI, Finland -- Becky Kellar of Hagarsville, ON scored twice to lead Team Canada to a 7-4 victory over Finland on Wednesday in the final round-robin game at a three-country women's international hockey tournament.
With the victory, Canada's Women's Olympic Hockey team finished round-robin play with a 4-0 won-lost record and is scheduled to play the host Finns in the tournament final today (Thursday). Canada had 5-3 and 5-2 victories over Sweden and a 5-2 victory over the host team entering the second round-robin game against Finland on Wednesday. The Finns finished round-robin play with a 2-2 won-lost mark, while Sweden went 0-4 in the tournament. Angela James of Toronto had a goal and an assist for Team Canada, which also got goals from Laura Schuler of Scarborough, ON, Danielle Goyette of St-Nazaire, QC, Jayna Hefford of Kingston, ON and Vicky Sunohara of Scarborough. Geraldine Heaney of Weston, ON chipped in with two assists.
Canada now has a won-lost record of 12-2 as it prepares to compete at the first-ever women's ice hockey tournament at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan next February. The women's team returns to Calgary on Friday and will begin training on Monday for the 3 Nations' Cup tournament in Lake Placid, NY against the second- and third-seeded teams at the six-team Olympic tournament -- Finland and the United States.
