Simon Gagné, who was part of Canada’s historic gold medal-winning team at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, announced his retirement Tuesday after 14 NHL seasons and six Team Canada appearances.

The Ste-Foy, Que., native made his international debut with Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 1997 Three Nations Cup, winning a gold medal, before adding a silver to his collection at the 1999 IIHF World Junior Championship.

It was at the World Juniors in Winnipeg, Man., that Gagné put his name in the Team Canada record book, scoring four times in a 12-2 quarter-final win over Kazakhstan to join Mario Lemieux as the only Canadians to score four goals in a game (Brayden Schenn was the third in 2011).

Three years later, in just his third NHL season, Gagné helped Canada end its 50-year Olympic gold medal drought as the youngest member of the team in Salt Lake City, and he won a World Cup of Hockey championship in 2004.

After finishing third in Team Canada scoring, and winning silver, at the 2005 IIHF World Championship, Gagné concluded his international career with a second Olympics, competing in the 2006 Games in Turin.

The 22nd overall pick in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, he finished NHL career with 601 points (291 goals, 310 assists) in 822 games with Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles and Boston, winning his lone Stanley Cup championship with the Kings in 2012.
