TOP REGULAR SEASON TEAM – SOO THUNDERBIRDS
The Soo Thunderbirds continue to reign atop the NOJHL regular season standings, claiming their fourth league title in the last five years in 2014-15. Soo had to survive a three-team race to the finish line, holding off Kirkland Lake by three points and Elliot Lake by four for first place. The Thunderbirds made their move very early in the season, running off a 12-game winning streak from Sept. 30-Nov. 1 to take control of the NOJHL standings. A scheduling anomaly saw the Thunderbirds play nine of their first 10 games on home ice before they embarked on a 12-game road trip from Oct. 15-Nov. 21, after which they played 10 of 12 as the host. The schedule didn’t seem to affect Soo, which led the league in offence (271 goals for) and defence (130 goals against), outscoring its opponents by more than a two-to-one margin. Nicolas Tassone had 68 points (eighth in the NOJHL) to lead a balanced offence that had eight players with at least 40 points, and 11 with 10+ goals. On the back end, Mario Culina and Brian Kment shared the goaltending duties, finishing first (2.24) and third (2.57), respectively, in goals-against average.
