Canada wins gold medal at 2013 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship
GOYANG, South Korea – Canada’s National Sledge Team has won the gold medal at the 2013 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, defeating the United States 1-0 in Saturday’s gold medal game at the SPART Complex.
It is the third time Canada has won gold at the IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, taking home the top prize previously in 2000 and 2008. Canada won the bronze medal at last year’s world championship in Hamar, Norway.
On Saturday, Graeme Murray (Gravenhurst, Ont.) scored the game’s lone goal early in the second period, while Corbin Watson (Kingsville, Ont.) recorded his fourth shutout of the tournament; the netminder did not allow a goal during the world championship. Captain Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) was named the tournament’s top forward.
“I am extremely proud of our entire team today,” said Mike Mondin, head coach of Canada’s National Sledge Team. “The players gave an incredible effort throughout the tournament and all season, and they were rewarded for their hard work.”
In Saturday’s bronze medal game, Russia claimed its first-ever world championship medal with a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic.
