CALGARY, Alta. – After posting semifinal wins on Thursday, Canada and the United States will meet in the gold medal game at the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge on Saturday night. Single-game tickets are available for just $12 for the gold medal game at the WinSport Canada Athletic & Ice Complex in Calgary.

It is the second time in the last three World Sledge Hockey Challenges that Canada and the U.S. will meet for gold; the Americans took the top prize with a 3-2 overtime win at the 2009 tournament in Charlottetown, P.E.I., ending Canada’s run of gold medals at two.

Canada beat Japan 9-2 in the late semifinal, while the United States topped Norway 7-2 in the early game.

Canada is looking for its fourth gold medal, having won the tournament in 2007 in Kelowna, B.C., 2008 in Charlottetown and last April in London, Ont., in addition to its silver medal in 2009. The Americans have won three bronze medals along with their 2009 gold, finishing third in 2007, 2008 and last April.

In Friday’s late semifinal, Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) and Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.) tied a World Sledge Hockey Challenge record with six points each as Canada earned the right to defend its gold medal. Westlake and Bowden finished with three goals and three assists each, while Kevin Rempel (Vineland, Ont.) scored twice and Kieran Block (Edmonton, Alta.) added one.

In the early game, the U.S. got a hat trick from Josh Pauls to pace the offence as it avenged a semifinal loss to the Norwegians last April. American captain Taylor Chace added a goal and an assist for the U.S., while Taylor Lipsett, Daniel McCoy and Rico Roman also scored. Alexi Salamone and Greg Shaw chipped in with two assists each, while goaltender Steve Cash made 14 saves to record the victory.

Canada finished first in the preliminary round with a perfect 3-0 record, including wins over Japan (8-0), Norway (5-2) and the U.S. (3-1). The Americans were second, with victories over Norway (5-1) and Japan (6-2) along with their loss to Canada.

Norway and Japan will meet for the bronze medal on Saturday afternoon (noon MT/2 p.m. ET).
