2011 NEW BRUNSWICK CHAMPIONS: Bathurst Northern Stars – advance to Atlantic Female Midget Championship

HOW BATHURST NORTHERN EARNED ITS SPOT AT THE ATLANTIC FEMALE MIDGET CHAMPIONSHIP

• Defeated Fredericton  4-1, but first fell to Moncton 2-0 in round robin competition at the NBMAAAFHL (New Brunswick Midget AAA Female Hockey League) provincial championship, held March 5 and 6 in Bathurst, N.B., putting the Stars in second place of three teams going into semifinals.
• Defeated Moncton 3-1 in championship game March 6.

NEW BRUNSWICK CHAMPIONS – BATHURST NORTHERN STARS

The Bathurst Northern Stars will have their second shot at making it to the Esso Cup when they compete at the upcoming 2011 Atlantic Female Midget Championship, taking place March 31-April 3 in Montague, P.E.I. They last competed at the 2009 Atlantic Female Midget Championship, held in Glace Bay, N.S., where they won gold at the tournament. If they come out successful as the Atlantic representatives again this year, the Stars will also have a second shot at proving themselves at the Esso Cup – they ended up in last place with four losses after round robin play at the inaugural Esso Cup, held in 2009 in Calgary, Alta. But if they can claim the 2011 New Brunswick Midget AAA Female Hockey League provincial championship title by beating the Moncton Rockets, who ended the 2010-11 regular season in first place and represented the region at last year’s Esso Cup, then perhaps the Stars can climb their way to the top at the Atlantic Female Midget Championship, too. Despite losing to the Rockets 2-0 in the round robin of the provincial championship, the underdog Stars kept their heads up and came back to beat the top New Brunswick squad 3-1 in the championship game.
