2010 IIHF World Junior Championship Opens Call for Saskatoon Volunteers
Announces SaskEnergy as official Volunteer sponsor
SASKATOON, SK – The host committee for the 2010 World Junior Championship (WJC) along with SaskEnergy, the official sponsor of volunteers, today announced that applications are now being accepted for those wishing to volunteer in either Saskatoon or Regina.
“This is a great opportunity for our province to shine on the world stage, and show the world our amazing Saskatchewan hospitality,” says Jack Brodsky, president of the 2010 WJC host organizing committee. “And we’re thrilled to have SaskEnergy on board as the official volunteer sponsor to help recruit our team of volunteers.”
“SaskEnergy’s commitment to volunteers has helped our province showcase many national and world-class events, and this December, because of Saskatchewan’s volunteers, we’ll host the best World Junior Championship ever,” said Ken Cheveldayoff, Minister of Crown Corporations. “While SaskEnergy is supporting the tournament’s volunteers, I know many of the Corporation’s employees will be among the first to sign up and donate their time and energy behind the scenes to make this event possible.”
Saskatoon will play host to five teams, including Team Canada, and will see a total of 21 round-robin, relegation, playoff, and medal-round games played at Credit Union Centre. About 1,500 volunteers will be required in Saskatoon alone.
“We’re looking for volunteers to help with round-robin games beginning Boxing Day and continuing right through to the gold medal game on ,” says Rod Antonichuck, vice-president of volunteers in Saskatoon. “There are numerous volunteer opportunities available—drivers, hosts, medical staff and servers for the World Fest activities, just to name a few.”
The City of Regina will play host to five European teams (Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic, Finland and Austria) during a 10-game round-robin portion of the WJC which begins at the Brandt Centre. Regina will also play host to Team Canada’s selection camp as well as two Team Canada pre-competition games, details for which will be announced in the future.
