Canada's National Men's Team Wins 2008 Deutschland Cup
MANNHEIM, GERMANY – For the first time since 2005, and the fourth time overall, Canada’s National Men’s Team has won the Deutschland Cup.
Norm Milley, Scott King and Pascal Trépanier scored the goals and Fred Brathwaite made 36 saves for Canada’s second consecutive shutout in a 3-0 win over Germany on Sunday at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany.
Canada finished the round-robin tournament with a perfect 3-0 record, outscoring the opposition 11-2. Brathwaite and Jamie Storr combined to shutout Canada’s opponents for the final 143:27 of the tournament. Storr blanked Switzerland 3-0 on Saturday.
In addition to the wins over Germany and Switzerland, Canada opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Slovakia on Friday. All of the teams that opposed Canada were the national teams of their respective countries.
Canada’s team at the 2008 Deutschland Cup is made up of Canadian players playing professionally in Germany, as well as one from the Austrian league.
