CALGARY – In tribute to Team Canada 1972, Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, has announced that the National Junior Team will wear 1972-style jerseys on September 4th, during Game 5 of the Canada/Russia Super Series in Winnipeg. It will mark the first time that the jerseys have been worn by any of Canada’s national teams since 1972.

Hockey Canada also announced that it will be auctioning off game-worn 1972-style jerseys and game-worn helmets. The white helmets will be signed by two members of the 1972 team – Dennis Hull and Rod Seiling – along with the current Team Canada player who wears it. The jerseys will not be signed.

This exclusive Team Canada auction will run for 10 days, starting on September 2nd and ending on September 12th. To view these unique auction items and for more information on how to bid, visit www.ebay.ca or www.hockeycanada.ca.

“The Canada/Russia rivalry began in 1972 and Canadian hockey fans will always remember that team,” says Bob Nicholson, President of Hockey Canada. “This is our way of paying tribute to ’72. Our players will be honoured to be the first in 35 years to wear those jerseys.”

“This team marks the first team since , which will wear our sweater in an international competition,” says Rod Seiling, Chairman of Team 72 Representation Inc. “The members of Team Canada 72 are proud to convey the sweater to such a fitting group of young men who are representing our country. We have always believed our sweater embodies the best of Canadian hockey and look forward to see it in competition once again.”

The 1972-style jerseys will not be for sale at any retail outlets, so the eBay auction is the only chance for fans to get their hands on one.

Among the jerseys that hockey fans have a chance to win via the auction are those of Kyle Turris, the highest Canadian player selected in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, John Tavares, the 2007 Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year, along with Karl Alzner, Leland Irving, Brad Marchand and Sam Gagner, all of whom won gold with Team Canada at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The Canada/Russia Super Series is a one-time eight-game series that features the best junior-aged (Under-20) players from both countries. The first four games will take place in Russia, with the final four set for Canada – Winnipeg, MB (September 4th), Saskatoon, SK (September 5th), Red Deer, AB (September 7th) and Vancouver, BC (September 9th).

Tickets are available now, through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.ca.

Net proceeds from this exclusive game-worn jersey and helmet auction will be shared by Hockey Canada’s grassroots programming, the CHL Scholarship Fund and Team 72 Representation Inc.
