March 19, 2007

Teams throughout Atlantic Canada have been competing all season to be a part of the Atlantic Championships which will be hosted throughout our region during the later part of March and early April. The host communities and committees have been working tirelessly to ensure that they are ready to host the provincial representative teams.

The Aliant Atlantics - Pee Wee AAA Championship will be hosted in Wolfville, Nova Scotia by the host team, the Acadia Axemen. The event will run from March 22nd to March 25th. The West Kent Aces of Hockey New Brunswick are the defending champions.

The Irving Oil Challenge Cup, Atlantic Canada's Bantam AAA Hockey Championship will be played from March 29th to April 1st in Fredericton, New Brunswick where the host team will be the District 3 Service Master Capitals. As New Brunswick Champions last season and Irving Oil Challenge Cup bronze medalists from 2006, the Caps are experienced and hoping to build upon last year’s performance. The St. John’s Irving All Stars of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador were last year’s champions.

The Midget AAA Atlantic Championship will be hosted in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador by the Western Bruins. The event will be played at the Stephenville Dome from March 22nd – March 25th. The Sussex Rangers of Hockey New Brunswick are the defending champions.

The Atlantic Regional Midget Major Hockey Championship will be played in Cornwall, Prince Edward Island and hosted by the Cornwall Thunder. The event will be played at the APM Centre from April 5th - 8th. The winner of this event will be the Atlantic Canadian representative at the Telus Cup -National Midget Hockey Championship which will be played in Red Deer, Alberta. The St. John’s Maple Leafs will be looking to return to the Atlantic Championships to defend their title.

The Midget Female Atlantic Championship will be hosted in Pownal, Prince Edward Island. This is the second year of this up and coming event. Two teams from each of the Maritime Branches will converge upon Pownal with the hopes of leaving with the title of Midget Female Hockey Atlantic Champions. The event will run from April 6th-8th.

Each of these events, with the exception of the Midget Female Atlantics, will feature the host team, along with the provincial champion from Hockey New Brunswick, Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador, Hockey Nova Scotia and Hockey Prince Edward Island.
