PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – After five days of competition at the 2001 Air Canada Cup National Midget Hockey Championship, it has come down to a Gold Medal match-up between the Calgary Royals (Pacific Region) and the Gouverneurs de Ste-Foy (Quebec Region) at 5 p.m. (Pacific Time), 8 p.m. (Eastern) on Sunday at the Prince George Multiplex.

The Royals, who finished the round robin portion of the championship in first place with a 4-1-0 record, defeated the Toronto Young Nationals (Central Region) 6-0 in Saturday’s first semi-final game. Ryan Barnett paces Calgary with 2 goals, while Nathan Lawson picked up the shutout for the Royals.

In Saturday’s second semi-final game, Ste-Foy, who finished the round robin portion of the championship in third place with a 3-2-0 record, defeated the Dartmouth Subways (Atlantic Region) 10-1. The Gouverneurs jumped out to an early lead, scoring 22 seconds into the game and never looked back. 2001 Air Canada Cup Most Valuable Player, Steve Bernier, picked up four points for the winners.

The Toronto Young Nationals will face the Dartmouth Subways in the Bronze medal game at 12 p.m. (Pacific Time), 3 p.m. (Eastern Time) at the Prince George Multiplex. The Gold medal game, featuring the Calgary Royals and the Gouverneurs de Ste-Foy will follow at 5 p.m. (Pacific Time), 8 p.m. (Eastern Time).

The Championship game will be broadcast live across Canada by The Sports Network (TSN) and Réseau des Sports (RDS).
