Cliff Fletcher Names Team Canada Coaching and Support Staff for 2000 World Hockey Championship in Russia

CALGARY, AB - Team Canada general manager Cliff Fletcher and Head Coach Tom Renney announced Wednesday the complete coaching staff along with the support staff that will lead Canada at the 2000 Men's World Hockey Championship in St. Petersburg, Russia April 28-May 14, 2000.

Heading up the coaching staff will be Tom Renney, current full-time head coach and general manager of the National Men's Team and Vice-President, Hockey with the Canadian Hockey Association. Mike Pelino, currently an assistant with Renney on Canada's National Men's team will be an assistant coach at the World Championship.

Renney and Pelino will be joined behind the bench by Butch Goring, who is presently the Head Coach of the NHL's New York Islanders. Goring will serve as associate coach with Team Canada at the Men's World Championship.

"We are very pleased to add Butch Goring to our coaching staff for this year's World Championship," said Cliff Fletcher, General Manager of Team Canada. "Butch brings a wealth of coaching and playing experience to the team as we prepare for the great challenge ahead."

As a player, Goring was an integral part of the Islanders' four Stanley Cups, capturing the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the 1981 playoffs. The former Head Coach of the Boston Bruins has just completed his first season with the Islanders. Before joining the Islanders, Goring, a native of St. Boniface, MB, coached the Denver/Utah Grizzlies of the IHL, capturing back-to-back championships in 1995 and 1996, and was named IHL Coach of the Year both seasons.Head

Denis Hainault, Director, High Performance with the CHA will serve as Team Leader. Fletcher also announced the support staff for this year's World Championship. Troy Parchman, of the Chicago Blackhawks will serve as the Equipment Manager, assisted by Robin McDonald, equipment manager with Canada's National Men's Team. Peter Friesen, of the Carolina Hurricanes, will be the Head Therapist, along with Don Fuller, from Canada's National Men's Team. Dr. Eric Babins of Calgary, AB will be the Team Doctor while Brad Pascall, Director, Communications with the CHA will serve as Media Relations manager. Mark Howell, who works for the CHA in Calgary, AB, will support the coaching staff, as Video manager.

The team will be getting together in Toronto on Thursday, April 20th for a three day camp at the Beatrice Ice Gardens at York (ON) University. The team leaves Canada April 22nd for St. Petersburg, Russia, the site of this year's World Hockey Championship.

Fletcher, Renney and the coaching staff are currently assembling the roster that will participate at this year's World Championship. An announcement on player selections will be forthcoming within the next 7 days.
