MCFARLAND’S SCORING TOUCH HELPS ONTARIO TO SECOND WIN

PORT ALBERNI, BC – Ontario has passed its first big test at the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Leading by just a goal heading after 40 minutes, the defending gold medalists struck three times in the final 40 minutes en route to a 5-2 win over Russia on Wednesday afternoon at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.

John McFarland led the way for Ontario, recording a hat trick in the win. McFarland scored once in the second period and twice in the third to lead the Ontarians to their second win in as many games at the U17 tournament. Tyler Toffoli and Sam Carrick also scored in the win.

Vladislav Namestnikov, who scored four times in Russia’s win over Slovakia on Tuesday, and Aleksander Gogolev had the goals for the Russians, who dropped to 1-2 in Group A.

Ontario will ring in the New Year on Thursday by traveling to Courtenay to face Germany (2 p.m. PST), while Russia will have the day off Thursday before taking on the Germans in Courtenay to wrap up the preliminary round on Friday (2 p.m. PST).
