THEN: A much-talked-about prospect for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Colborne played an important role in Canada West’s second consecutive World Junior A Challenge gold medal in 2007, teaming with Camrose linemate Mike Connolly (record-tying 11 points, tournament MVP) to pace the offence. After a slow start, with just one point in two preliminary round contests, Colborne stepped it up in the win-or-go-home games, combining for five points (1G, 4A) in Canada West’s quarter-final and semifinal victories. With Canada West nursing a one-goal lead midway through the second period of the gold medal game, Colborne capped off his tournament scoring by converting on a power play opportunity to add a little insurance in a 4-1 win over Canada East.
NOW: Colborne used his World Junior A Challenge experience as a springboard to a tremendous 2007-08 season with Camrose, finishing second in AJHL scoring with 90 points (33G, 57A) and claiming AJHL Playoff MVP honours as the Kodiaks advanced to the RBC Cup, Canada’s National Junior A Championship. At the national championship in Cornwall, Ont., the Calgary native recorded five points in five games as Camrose came up just one goal short in the final, falling 1-0 to Humboldt. He was also honoured with the RBC CJHL Player of the Year award, and capped off a busy year by being selected 16th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2008 NHL draft. After two seasons with the University of Denver, Colborne turned pro with Boston’s AHL affiliate in Providence in 2010 before being traded to Toronto as part of the Tomas Kaberle deal in February 2011. He made his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs on and split his 2011-12 season between the Leafs and AHL Marlies, scoring his first NHL goal against Tampa Bay.
