Hockey Canada Announces First Group of Players for 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship
CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada announced Wednesday a first group of players for the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.
“We are extremely happy with the response we have received from players and are very pleased with the group that we have been able to assemble to date,” said Kevin Lowe, Canada’s general manager for the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. “We are looking forward to getting together as a team in Zurich and going for gold in Helsinki.”
“Hockey Canada would like to thank all the players for accepting this opportunity to represent their country at the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship,” said Brad Pascall, Hockey Canada’s vice-president of hockey operations and national teams. “We are glad to see the enthusiasm these players showed when asked to play at the world championship.”

The group includes two Olympic gold medallists (Getzlaf, Perry), three Olympians (Bouwmeester, Getzlaf, Perry) and three IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship gold medallists (Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Ward), while 16 of the 17 players have represented Canada internationally. Ted Purcell will be representing Canada in international competition for the first time.
The coaching staff will be announced by Hockey Canada in the very near future.
Lowe and Pascall, along with the team’s two assistant general managers, Peter Chiarelli (Ottawa, Ont./Boston, NHL) and Dave Nonis (Burnaby, B.C./Toronto, NHL) will add additional players over the coming weeks, with a limit of 25 players on the official roster. Canada’s world championship management team is also supported by members of Canada’s National Men’s Team management group, comprised of executive director Steve Yzerman (Nepean, Ont./Tampa Bay, NHL), Doug Armstrong (Sarnia, Ont./St. Louis, NHL), Ken Holland (Vernon, B.C./Detroit, NHL), Bob Nicholson (Penticton, B.C./Hockey Canada), Lowe and Pascall.
Canada’s National Men’s Team will be holding a pre-competition camp in Zurich from April 27-May 1, playing in two pre-competition games – April 29 vs. Switzerland in Fribourg, SUI and May 1 vs. Switzerland in Kloten, SUI. The 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship runs from May 4-20, in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden, with Canada based out of Helsinki for the entire event. Canada opens up against Slovakia on May 4. All of Canada’s games will be aired on TSN/RDS. Check your local listings for game times in your area.
