Northern Stars Win Atlantic Championship
Five games, five wins. It’s off to Calgary for the Northern Stars.
The Stars claimed the Atlantic Region title on Sunday with a 3-2 win over Nova Scotia champions Metro Boston Pizza in Glace Bay, N.S., booking a spot at the 2009 Esso Cup in Calgary, Alta., adding the Atlantic championship to the New Brunswick title they won two weeks ago.
The Stars were the class of the Atlantics, outscoring the opposition 32-12 over five games.
Northern’s opening-game win over the host Cape Breton Screaming Eagles was the Kim Deschênes show, as she led the way with a five-goal performance in a 6-1 win.
After a 5-4 overtime win over Western, the Newfoundland & Labrador champs – Deschênes was again the hero, completing her hat trick with the extra-time winner – the Stars routed Metro 12-3 to clinch a spot in the championship game. Deschênes scored three more times and added two assists in the win, while Julie Breau also had a hat trick and added five assists for an eight-point outing.
A 6-2 win over the Capital District Cyclones, the P.E.I. champions, gave the Stars a perfect round robin and set up a rematch with Metro with a trip to Calgary on the line.
Deschênes and Alyssa Sherrard scored first-period goals to give Northern an early lead, and Karine Roy’s goal late in the second period proved to be the winner as the Stars held off Metro 3-2 to book their trip to the national championship.
