Canada's National Women's Team Looks to The Future of Program With Spring Evaluation Camp From May 8-11, 2003 in Ottawa, ON

CALGARY, AB – Canada’s National Women’s Team is holding a spring evaluation camp from May 8-11, 2003 in Ottawa, ON to evaluate 53 of the top players in Canada. Over the past few years, these players have been identified as top players by their respective branches for regional and provincial teams, by their leagues and now by the Canadian Hockey Association.

Players for this spring evaluation camp were selected following a thorough scouting and evaluation process during the 2002-2003 season, overseen by the CHA’s Head Scout, Female Hockey, Wally Kozak. The evaluation process included scouting hundreds of players on their respective club teams, with regional and provincial teams as well as with the National Under-22 team. Kozak will also oversee player evaluation at the evaluation camp in Ottawa.

The evaluation camp roster includes six goaltenders, 15 defencemen and 32 forwards. Forward Caroline Ouellette and goaltender Charline Labonté (alternate goaltender) are the only members of Canada’s 2003 World Championship Team that will be attending. The 2003 IIHF World Women Hockey Championship in Beijing, China was cancelled by the IIHF because of safety and health concerns.

The National Team Spring Evaluation Camp will include daily practices and six intersquad games. All practices and games will be held at the University of Ottawa campus and are open to the public free of charge.

“This represents an excellent opportunity to evaluate these top young players, who have been working hard so that they are ready to challenge for spots on our National teams,” said Kozak. “The depth of talent in women’s hockey in Canada continues to grow and we’re looking forward to great competition at this camp.”

Players interested in being part of Canada’s National Women’s Team Program’s evaluation process should start by contacting their Provincial/Regional branches for information on provincial and regional evaluation camps and opportunities for women’s hockey players in their area. For a full listing of the 13 CHA branches, visit the “About the CHA” section of the CHA’s website, at www.canadianhockey.ca
