DAY 7 – SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7 Josh Pauls (F) – United States
Was there any other choice? Josh Pauls put his name alongside Brad Bowden (2007) and Taylor Chace (2009) as players who scored overtime winners in the gold medal game at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge, taking a pass from Brody Roybal and wiring a shot from the slot over the glove of Russian netminder Evgeny Plotnikov after just 19 seconds of the extra period. He is one of just four Americans who have been a part of all three WSHC gold medals, along with Steve Cash, Nikko Landeros, and Adam Page.
DAY 5 – THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5 Sergey Panfilov (F) – Russia
He scored very early, he scored very late, and now Russia will play for gold for the first time ever at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge. Sergey Panfilov was the man with the Midas touch for the Russians in their semifinal win over Canada on Thursday night, banging in a rebound just 72 seconds in and roofing the game-winner with 52.9 seconds left, giving Russia its first-ever win over the Canadians and helping it reach its second consecutive gold medal game at a major international sledge hockey tournament.
DAY 4 – WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 4 Nikko Landeros (D) – United States
Offensive zone? How about the game’s only two goals. Defensive zone? How about holding the high-powered Canadian offence to just 13 shots on goal. Nikko Landeros was everywhere on Wednesday night; the veteran American defenceman scored the game-winner late in the first period, added insurance midway through the third and made his impact felt at both ends of the ice, helping the U.S. hand Canada its first-ever preliminary round loss and finish atop the round-robin standings for the first time in the tournament’s eight-year history.
DAY 2 – MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2 Corbin Watson (G) – Canada & Vladimir Kamentsev (G) – Russia
They were both so good, why choose just one? Corbin Watson and Vladimir Kamentsev put on a goaltending clinic on Monday night, contributing to one of the most exciting games in tournament history, and arguably the best that wasn’t Canada-U.S. After combining for 14 stops in a busy first period, Watson finished with 17 saves to earn the shutout while Kamentsev turned away 23 of 25 shots, and made a number of huge saves to keep the game scoreless early, or keep his team within a goal late.
DAY 1 – SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1 Brad Bowden (F) – Canada
To adapt an old cliché, there are three certainties in the world – death, taxes, and Brad Bowden being an offensive leader for Canada’s National Sledge Team. Bowden kicked off his 16th season with Team Canada with another ho-hum performance, opening and closing the scoring and finishing with four points to lead Canada to a tournament-opening victory over Korea. The Orton, Ont., native has 258 points for the national team since 2004, pushing him one ahead of Greg Westlake, who “only” had three points on Sunday night.
