Under 18 Hockey Challenge Headlines

ONTARIO CLAIMS THE INAUGURAL WOMEN'S UNDER 18 HOCKEY CHALLENGE WITH 3-2 DOUBLE OVERTIME VICTORY OVER QUEBEC IN GOLD MEDAL FINAL

Ontario claimed the inaugural Women's Under 18 Hockey Challenge with a 3-2 double overtime victory over Quebec in gold medal final in Trois-Rivières, QC.

Laurie Ross, of Manotik, ON, scored at 8:07 of a second overtime period to give Ontario a win over Quebec. Quebec held a 2-1 lead after two periods on goals by Caroline Beauregard, of Matagami, QC, and Valerie Chouinard, of Matane, QC. Lindsay Williams, of Mississauga, ON, had scored Ontario's first goal.

Samantha Shirley, of Mississauga, ON, tied the game at 8:27 of the third period, setting the stage for Ross' heroics.

Team Western takes bronze medal

Earlier in the day, Team Western, comprised of players from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, claimed the bronze medal with a 2-0 victory over Team Pacific, made up of players from British Columbia and Alberta.

Amanda Steranko, of Regina, SK, broke a scoreless game at 6:28 of the third period and Jeni Creary, of Shell Lake, SK, scored into an empty net to give Team Western the victory. Goaltender Jenna Burdy of Brandon, MB, made 17 saves to secure the shutout.
 

General Information

Player Classification
Female competitors under 18 years of age as of December 31, 2000 with the year of birth, 1983. All participants must be a minimum of 13 years of age as of December 31, 2000 with the year of birth, 1987.

Competition Format
The competition format will have a preliminary round (single round robin). In the preliminary round, each team will play one game against each other team (total of 5 games)

The playoff round will include:

  • First and Second Place team will play for the gold medal;
  • Third and Fourth Place team will play for the bronze medal;
  • Fifth and Sixth Place team will play a seeding game
