LAC ST-LOUIS SQUEAKS INTO SEMIS WITH WIN OVER HEARTBROKEN HOSTS

ST. ALBERT, Alta. – They came within a single goal from tying 2010 Esso Cup bronze medallists the EdmontonThunder and beating silver medallists the Notre Dame Hounds in a shootout this week in their hometown, but inthe end being the host team may have been too much pressure for the St. Albert Slash.

Even if they had won in overtime or a shootout, the Slash would have been facing off in semifinal actionFriday, but their 2011 Esso Cup concluded Thursday with a 4-2 loss to the Kodiaks du Lac St-Louis (Québec),who fought hard on the ice for the regulation win they needed to finish in fourth place after the roundrobin.

The Kodiaks, not only representing the Lac St-Louis area but also representing their school, Kuper Academyin Kirkland, Que., are the only Quebec team thus far in tournament history to finish in a spot higher thansixth place in Esso Cup preliminary standings.

Thursday night’s victory was especially sweet for twins Stephanie and Karine Pellerin Therien (PointeClare, Que.), with Stephanie scoring in the first and Karine following suit in the second to snag the firsttwo goals of the game for Lac St-Louis – on their 17th birthdays to boot.

Vickie Lemire (Rigaud, Que.) put the icing on the birthday cake, so to speak, putting another two on thescoreboard to make it 4-0 for Lac St-Louis by the end of the second.

Reality finally seemed to sink in for the Slash in the third, who finally started playing like they’recapable of when they stepped onto the ice for the final frame, with Karly Heffernan (St. Albert, Alta.)assisting Angela Mason (St. Albert, Alta) at 15:36 in the period. But persistent play in the offensive zonewas too little, too late for the host team, who skated off the ice clearly devastated to lose out on a spotin semifinals in front of family, friends and local hockey fans.

Nevertheless, their enthusiastic supporters cheered them on throughout the game and off the ice, standingstrong behind their Slash until their buzzer on the 2011 Esso Cup officially sounded.
