CAVELL SCORES TWO, THUNDER WIN SECOND

ST. ALBERT, Alta. – Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) helped the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific) add anotherthree points to the standings Monday, scoring half of her team’s goals en route to a 4-2 win over the TorontoAeros (Ontario) on the ice at Servus Place during an exciting mid-afternoon matchup.

Cavell notched her first marker of the game just four minutes into the first, with Heather Kashman(Edmonton, Alta.) and Alison Campbell (Edmonton, Alta.) helping out. But the Toronto Aeros put up a healthyfight from start to finish, firing almost as many shots on the opposition’s net as Edmonton through all threeperiods, including eight in the first.

While Toronto couldn’t break the goose egg in the first, the team’s succession of shots paid off, withKristi Riseley (Pickering, Ont.) tying it up at 5:20 in the second and Brooke Webster (Aurora, Ont.) givingthe Aeros a 2-1 edge at on a powerplay at 11:07 in the period. Fans watched in anticipation as netminders atboth ends of the ice continued to be peppered with shots, facing 10 each during the second, and HeatherKashman (Edmonton, Alta.) evened it up at two-apiece before the period was up.

But despite Toronto’s best efforts in the third, the Thunder’s Caitlin Connell (Edmonton, Alta.) was ableto capitalize on a powerplay less than two minutes into the period. Cavell sealed the 4-2 deal at 16:54, whenshe escaped based Toronto’s defence, skated hard toward the net on a breakaway and easily slipped it past theAeros’ goal line. Thunder goaltender Morgan Glover (Edmonton, Alta.) faced 22 shots total, while SarahStephens (Barrie, Ont.) faced 24 shots through three periods.

Ontario takes on Quebec in Tuesday’s early game at Servus Place, while the Pacific representatives faceoff against the host team in an all Alberta matchup for the late game.
