KAMPJES, KUEBER HELP HOST TEAM TO SHUTOUT WIN

ST. ALBERT, Alta. – With the comfort of their home rink as a backdrop, and the cheers of family andfriendsin the background Monday night, the St. Albert Slash (host) skated to their second win of the 2011Esso Cup, a5-0 shutout over the Kings County Kings (Atlantic).

Although the Kings came out motivated to snag their first win of the tournament, the game swayed infavourof the Slash midway through the first when Sabrina Flemming (St. Albert, Alta.) lit up the lamp withhelpfrom Deanna Morin (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) on a powerplay, giving the host team a 1-0 lead afterthefirst.

The Slash seemed to come out in the second with even more confidence, allowing Karly Heffernan (St.Albert,Alta.) to make it 2-0 at 10:44 and Jessica Kampjes (Bon Accord, Alta.) to score her first of thenight whileshorthanded at 18:45 in the period. The Slash continued to click on the ice, capping off thesecond at 3-0 andkicking off the third determined to hold onto the lead.

That they did, and then some, with Melissa Kueber (St. Albert, Alta.) able to put the puck past theKingsCounty goal line at 12:10, despite the opposition being on the powerplay again. Kings County scrambledto geton the scoreboard, but just couldn’t shake the Slash, who not only maintained the lead but addedanother fromKampjes in the final minute of the game.

An ecstatic crowd whopped and hollered as they watched the Slash celebrate another win at the EssoCup,giving them another three points in the standings and getting them closer to medal chances atCanada’sNational Female Midget Championship.

Kings County will be in tough when they play last year’s silver medallists the Notre Dame Hounds (West)at4 p.m. MT Tuesday, while St. Albert Slash will also be in for a challenge when they face off againsttheEdmonton Thunder (Pacific) at 7:30 p.m. MT.
