2010 Esso Cup

SUNDAY, APRIL 4, 2010

Hello hockey world,

Happy Easter folks! It sure has gotten beautiful out here in Saskatchewan. Yesterday, the Rebels were scheduled to have an exhibition game against a women's team from Saskatoon but they weren't able to make it. So instead, our coach decided to have an intrasquad game, meaning we split our team up into two squads and play against each other.

A few dads volunteered to referee and even our coaches, Laurie and Julie, put the gear on and played with the girls. It was very tiring only having two lines on each team but it was a lot of fun too. Our fitness level is great right now; the girls were tired but we weren't exhausted.

We get the day off today, and then we’re right back on the ice tomorrow. All the girls are meeting up before practice for a little team bonding, and then it’s straight to the rink. The time sure is flying by and we are all getting very excited about the tournament coming up quickly!

Happy Easter to you and your families.

FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 2010

Hello hockey world,

It has been a very strenuous week of hockey! The Rebels have had three practices and a workout that went great; it really shows everybody’s fitness levels. In practice we are starting to get into team systems, passing, shooting and a lot of battle drills. The Rebels have always been a hardworking team; we pressure the puck and get into the dirty areas of the ice.

It was April Fool’s Day yesterday, so the girls got together and we all decided to get our coaches. The team has designated coloured jerseys for the certain lines we are on, so the defence switched with all the forwards and the forwards switched with all the defence and goalies. The look on our coaches’ faces was priceless when we all stepped onto the ice together.

In a situation like the one we are in, it is always a good thing to have as much fun as possible. Today is Good Friday so we get to take practice off, a rare occasion, but tomorrow we are back on the ice for a scrimmage against the University of Regina Cougars. It is always nice to play some Rebels alumni and a team at that skill level.

TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 2010

Hello hockey world,

Well, yesterday was the first practice at the new rink! It was definitely a big switch over from the small ice surface we used to practice on. The first thing I noticed when stepping onto the ice was how bright the lights really were. It was like switching from normal television to HD!

The next thing I noticed was how far it took to get from one end of the rink to the other! It is great we get to practice in the new rink weeks in advance of the Esso Cup so that we can get used to the big switch.

The last thing I noticed was the temperature change to this rink. It is a lot warmer than any other arenas in Regina, so it will be great to get used to that aspect of the game. Other than getting used to the changes, our first practice went great and everybody worked very hard. The fitness sessions we have been doing are really starting to pay off.

SUNDAY, MARCH 28, 2010

Hello hockey world,

It was a great weekend of hockey for all of the Rebels. Spring camp was a big success and there was a lot of young talent coming in for next season. I am very excited for the Rebels program next year; the girls show a lot of promise. I think the best part about the weekend was stepping onto the new rink for the first time. It is a little warmer than other rinks in Regina but the ice is fast and the surface is big. The Rebels really showed off their fitness during the weekend and all the girls had a great couple of games.

No time for rest though, as we are back on the ice tomorrow for practice! It sure was a great feeling walking into the rink without having to haul equipment, and to walk into the dressing room with our gear warm and dry. The room is great and everyone has moved in quite nicely although we have requested warmer water in the showers!

Time to catch up on some homework and get a good night’s sleep after a busy weekend of hockey.

Jenny
