2013 TELUS Cup

Valley Wildcats 1 - Saskatoon Contacts 9

OLYNEK’S FOUR POINTS LEAD CONTACTS TO SEMIFINAL BERTH

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Kolten Olynek scored three times and added an assist to lead the Saskatoon Contacts to a one-sided 9-1 win over the Valley Wildcats in the preliminary round finale for both at the 2013 TELUS Cup on Friday afternoon.

The win guarantees the Contacts a semifinal spot; they won’t find out where they finish and who they play on Saturday until after Friday’s final game between Laval-Montréal and Sault Ste. Marie.

Terrell Draude scored twice, and Vukie Mpofu added a goal and two assists for Saskatoon (2-1-2), which is among the final four for the second year in a row, after winning the bronze medal at last year’s national championship in Leduc, Alta.

Kobe Kindrachuk, MacArthur Bell and Wyatt Sloboshan scored the other goals for the Contacts. Bell and Sloboshan had a goal and an assist apiece, while Rodney Southam and Jeremy Leclerc chipped in with two helpers each.

Grant Janes scored the lone goal for Valley (0-5), ending Saskatoon goaltender Brock Hamm’s shutout bid on the power play with 1:24 to go.

Friday’s game marked the fourth time in five games the Wildcats allowed at least six goals. They gave up 34 in five games in total.

Knowing a win would guarantee their spot in the semifinals the Contacts wasted no time taking the lead, getting a goal from Olynek just 4:01 in for a 1-0 advantage.

By the end of the first period the Saskatoon lead was 4-0, and was 7-0 by the time the horn sounded to end the first 40 minutes, with Olynek completing his hat trick just past the game’s midway point.

Bell and Sloboshan, on a penalty shot, capped the Saskatoon scoring in the third before Janes’ goal.

Hamm finished with 19 saves in the Contacts’ goal, while Michael Ritcey gave up seven goals on 28 shots for the Wildcats before being replaced by Michael Pettet for the third period; Pettet stopped eight of the 10 shots he faced.
