2012 RBC Cup

Portage Terriers (WST) 3 - Humboldt Broncos (HST) 5

JOHNSTON’S TWO GOALS HELP BRONCOS FINISH PERFECT PRELIMS WITH WIN OVER TERRIERS

HUMBOLDT, Sask. – Andrew Johnston scored twice to pace the offence once again as the Humboldt Broncos wrapped up a perfect preliminary round at the 2012 RBC Cup with a 5-3 win over the Portage Terriers on Thursday night.

While the Broncos had already locked up first place regardless of Thursday’s result, the loss ended the Terriers’ season; Portage needed to beat the Broncos to have any chance of advancing to the semifinals.

Humboldt will face the Woodstock Slammers in Saturday’s first semifinal (2 p.m. MT). The Broncos had the upper hand in the preliminary round meeting between the teams, earning a 4-1 win in the first game for both last Saturday.

Johnston had what certainly has to rank as one of the strangest multi-goal games of his young career – he gave Humboldt its first lead at 2-1 on a second period penalty shot, and scored the eventual game-winner early in the third period from outside the Portage blue-line; his dump-in skipped and changed direction past Terriers goaltender Adam Iwan, putting the Broncos up 4-2.

Taylor Duzan, Emrik Guillemette and Ryan Marshall had the other goals for Humboldt (4-0), which has never lost a preliminary round game on home ice at the National Junior A Championship; it went 3-0 when it welcomed the nation to the 1987 Centennial Cup.

The Broncos are two wins away from becoming just the third host team to run the table and win the national title since the start of the five-team format in 1990, joining Olds in 1994 and Halifax in 2002.

Shaq Merasty scored twice to pace the Terriers’ offence, while Dylan Butler had the other goal for Portage (1-3), which won its opening game and lost the next three for the third time in as many trips to the RBC Cup; it went win-loss-loss-loss in 2005 and last year as well.

Thursday’s game was the eighth meeting in 20 days between the two teams – the Broncos beat the Terriers in seven games to win the ANAVET Cup, a series Humboldt led 3-0 before Portage fought back to force a Game 7.
