PHÉNIX CONTINUE OFFENSIVE ROLL, MOVE TO 2-0 WITH WIN OVER CONTACTS

Despite all the success Quebec teams have had at the National Midget Championship – the Phénix’s two wins should make it the 24th consecutive Quebec team to reach the semifinals – Collège Esther-Blondin (2-0) is the first team from the province to start with back-to-back wins since Collège Charles-Lemoyne at the 2004 tournament.

Daniel Audette, Vincent Deslauriers and Frédérik Gauthier had the other goals for the Phénix, which got multiple-point games from Dauphin, Storto, Audette and Gauthier en route to its second 6-2 victory in as many days – it beat Sudbury by the same score in its opener on Monday.

Rourke Chartier had both goals for Saskatoon (0-1-1), which was outshot 39-36. Chartier’s first goal, in the final minute of the second period, gave the Contacts hope heading into the third, but Deslauriers goal at the 6:03 mark of the final frame was the backbreaker.

Saskatoon is the first West Region champion to go winless in its first two games at the TELUS Cup since the Beardy’s Blackhawks in 2001. Tuesday’s loss is just the third loss by a team from West in the last eight years, spanning 51 games.

The Phénix will aim to keep its perfect record alive against the Moncton Flyers on Wednesday afternoon (12:30 p.m. MT), while the Contacts take their third crack at win No. 1 when they take on the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves in the midday contest (4 p.m. MT).
