Jason Spezza opened the scoring for Canada in the game’s opening six minutes, but that would be the only goal it would get as the Canadians lost to the Russians in the gold medal game for the second year in a row.

SEMIFINAL | FRI. MAY 8

For the third year in a row Canada will play for the gold medal at the IIHF World Championship after Derek Roy scored twice to lead the Canadians to a semifinal win over Sweden. Dany Heatley had the other goal.

Steven Stamkos and Dan Hamhuis each had a goal and an assist in the second period as Canada advanced to the semifinals at the IIHF World Championship for the seventh year in a row with a victory over the Latvians.

CANADA 3 – FINLAND 4 QUALIFICATION | MON. MAY 4
Dany Heatley scored a pair of power play goals to complete Canada’s comeback from a 3-1 deficit and force overtime, but the Finns earned a shootout victory to send the Canadians to a quarter-final vs. Latvia.

CANADA 5 – NORWAY 1 QUALIFICATION | SUN. MAY 3
Drew Doughty scored once and added two assists as the Canadians maintained their perfect record with a victory over the Norwegians. Steven Stamkos picked up his tournament-leading sixth goal in the win.

CANADA 5 – CZECH REPUBLIC 1 QUALIFICATION | THU. APR. 30

Canada’s power play continued to click, scoring on its first three opportunities, as Canada opened the qualification round with a win over the Czechs. Steven Stamkos scored a pair of goals and added an assist.

Defenceman Braydon Coburn of the Philadelphis Flyers has been added to Canada’s roster for the remainder of the world championship. Coburn’s addition brings the number of players to 24, one below the limit. » more
