OKANAGAN HOCKEY ACADEMY BLANKS FORT FRANCES HIGH SCHOOL

by Jared Gauthier

WINNIPEG, Man – In the second day of Female World Sport School action, the high school from Ontario just couldn’t keep up with the academy from British Columbia. The red-hot Okanagan Hockey Academy squared off against Fort Frances High School, and skated away with the 6-0 shutout.

Coming off a win last night, Okanagan Hockey Academy carried every bit of momentum into Friday morning’s match against Fort Frances. Fort Frances had have a rough start to the tournament, getting shutout in their first two games, the first coming against St. Mary’s Academy.

“It’s been a great tournament for us so far,” Okanagan Hockey Academy assistant coach Gina Kingsbury said. “We weren’t doing the same things that we did in the first two games, but the girls have still been playing great.”

The game’s first goal came halfway through the first period from Okanagan forward Chanelle Petrie (Kamloops, B.C.). Okanagan went on to score three more in the period, one from forward Hannah Miller (North Vancouver, B.C.) and two from defenceman Alexa Ranahan (Salmon Arm, B.C.).

Shots through one were 13-to-5 for Okanagan Hockey Academy.

The second period saw no loss of energy from either squad. After dominating most of the period, Okanagan struggled on the penalty kill. Fort Frances stayed in the game after a 5-on-3 gave the Ontario team a slight edge, but its players weren’t able to capitalize.

Okanagan beat Fort Frances in shots through two, 25-to-12. The period’s lone goal came from Okanagan forward Emily Gervais (Kamloops, B.C.). Gervais also tallied an assist in the first period.

The story wasn’t any different in the third. Okanagan held a commanding hold over the game, beating Fort Frances in shots, 31-17. Despite a late surge in the last two minutes, Fort Frances wasn’t able to generate any goals as time ticked down on the clock.

Player of the Game for Fort Frances was forward Jessica Coran (Fort Frances, Ont.). Miller took home her second Player of the Game honours for her Okanagan squad.
Fort Frances will play again Friday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. CT in the Winnipeg Free Press rink. Okanagan sits at the top of Pool A, and will await the results of today’s action to determine who it will play tomorrow.
