SPOONER SCORES IN SHOOTOUT TO GIVE CANADA WIN OVER U.S.

TORONTO, Ont. – Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont.) was the shootout hero, scoring the lone goal and sending the crowd at the MasterCard Centre home happy as Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team earned a 6-5 victory over the United States on Thursday night, the second win in as many nights for the Canadians.

Spooner’s goal capped up a back-and-forth affair that saw the Canadians twice fight back to tie the game in the third period, after climbing out of a 2-0 first-period hole and blowing a 3-2 second-period advantage.

The Americans opened the scoring with two power play goals in the first, from Monique Lamoureux and Brianna Decker, giving them an early 2-0 lead that sent the Canadians scrambling. But Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) helped Canada regain its confidence by scoring her first of the night at 11:58 in the period, with help from Jillian Saulnier (Halifax, N.S.) and Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont.).

The Canadian momentum continued into the second, with Wakefield netting her second of the game at 5:10 to even the game at 2-2 before Isabel Menard (Ottawa, Ont.) gave Canada its first lead at 3-2, but the Americans needed just 7:26 to draw even as Hilary Knight one-timed a shot past Canadian netminder Amanda Mazzotta (London, Ont.) to send the game to the second intermission tied 3-3.

Knight needed just 11 seconds of the third period to score her second of the game, putting the Americans back on top, but Wakefield responded with her hat trick goal thanks to a terrific pass from Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.).

American sisters Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux combined to break the tie with just 2:16 to go, but the Canadians again fought back to pull even – this time Wakefield was on the passing end, combining with Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont.) to set up Jenner with 68 seconds remaining.
A scoreless overtime led to the shootout, where Canadians Poulin and Jenner and Americans Knight, Kendall Coyne and Jocelyne Lamoureux came up short, leading to Spooner’s winner. The Canadian forward went forehand-backhand-forehand on U.S. goaltender Alyssa Grogan, giving Canada the victory.

Canada and the United States face off in the third and final game of the series in Toronto this Saturday, August 21, at the MasterCard Centre, with game time set for 7:15 p.m. ET.
