PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE SECURES SPOT IN SPORT SCHOOL CHALLENGE SEMIS WITH WIN OVER SHAFTESBURY

WINNIPEG, Man. – Halli Krzyzaniak (Neepawa, Man.) and Morgan Sakundiak (Cochrane, Alta.) both scored once and added an assist, while Sara Besseling (Vaxholm, Sweden) made 19 saves in goal, as the Pursuit of Excellence skated to a 3-1 win over Shaftesbury Hockey Academy on Friday morning at the Female World Sport School Challenge.

Emma Hare (Nelson, B.C.) also tallied for the Pursuit of Excellence, which with the win finishes off the preliminary round unbeaten at 3-0-0 and will advance to the semifinal. Rachel Dyck (Winnipeg Beach, Man.) made 29 saves in net for Shaftesbury, which drops to 1-1 with one game remaining in the preliminary round.

Despite being outshot 14-4 in the opening period, Shaftesbury, on a goal from Michela Espositio (Winnipeg, Man.), took a 1-0 lead into the second period.

Both teams traded chances in the middle stanza, as a combined total of 21 shots were fired at the net, with Krzyzaniak the lone goal-scorer in the period, as she made it 1-1 after 40 minutes.

Less than eight minutes into the third period, Hare pulled the Pursuit of Excellence out in front with the eventual game-winner, while Sakundiak added an insurance marker less than four minutes later, as the Pursuit of Excellence would hang on for the win.

Up next for the Pursuit of Excellence is a semifinal clash against the Edge School for Athletes on Saturday at 2:00 pm CT. Meanwhile, Shaftesbury hits the ice for their second game on Day 2 at 3:30 pm CT, when it takes on Rothesay Netherwood School, which beat Banff Hockey Academy 6-1 earlier Friday.
