EDGE SCHOOL SNAGS WIN OVER HOST TEAM ST. MARY’S

by Janessa Wirth

WINNIPEG, Man. – Day 2 of the 2013 Female World Sport School Challenge started off with a match between host team St. Mary’s Academy and the Edge School for Athletes. A crowd of about 200 students and 50 friends and family members were loud and energetic in the stands, cheering on their St. Mary’s Academy Flames. But much to their dismay, the hosts came up short and suffered a 7-1 loss to the Edge School for Athletes on Thursday morning.

The first period was a quick one, with Edge in complete control. The first goal was scored just over two minutes into the game by Eden Murray (Calgary, Alta.). The Edge players were proving to be a little bit sharper in their passing, which lead to another quick goal by Alexis Harle (Calgary, Alta.). Alex Serpico (Calgary, Alta.) was also able to snipe two quick goals before the period was done, making it 4-0 going into intermission.

The intensity continued to build as the first period went on. Both teams suffered a few penalties; however, it did not impact the score.

Even as St. Mary’s Academy fell behind, the local school’s fan base was still going loud and strong. Goaltender Anna Kulas (Winnipeg, Man.) was blocking shots high and low. Christian Higham (Winnipeg, Man.) had two breakaway chances, but could not get it past Kirsten Chamberlin (Cochrane, Alta.).

St. Mary’s received a standing ovation as the second period started. The host team came back a lot stronger with cleaner passes, creating a few great chances, but could not get any shots past Kirsten Chamberlin (Cochrane, Alta.). Edge kept control with two more goals scored by Kate Hufnagel (Cochrane, Alta.) and Karly Heffernan (Calgary, Alta.). Shots were almost even through the second period.

Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alta.) scored another for the Edge early in the third. St. Mary’s was finally able to put one on the board with a power-play goal from Meike Meilleur (Winnipeg, Man.). The penalties continued to stack up in the third with two from both teams. St. Mary’s Academy was unable to put any more points on the board, for the 7-1 final on the board.
