BENELL STANDS TALL IN PEI’S SHOOTOUT WIN Charlottetown, PEI – Kelsey O’Donnell (Souris, PEI/University of PEI, CIS) scored four goals – two in regulation and two in a shootout – to give Team PEI a thrilling 4-3 victory over New Brunswick in semi-final action at the 2008 Esso Women’s Nationals on Friday. O’Donnell’s second goal in the shootout was the game-winner, and it sends PEI to Saturday’s final against Manitoba. O’Donnell opened the game’s scoring but New Brunswick held a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, on goals by Shelby Lyons (Fredericton, NB/Ridley College) and Catherine Boudreau (Spruce Grove, AB/St. Thomas University, CIS). PEI tied it in the second thanks to a penalty-shot goal by Amanda Armstrong (Cobourg, PEI/University of PEI, CIS). That came with her team killing off a penalty. New Brunswick regained the lead when Renee Edison (Gander, NL/St. Thomas University, CIS) scored at 3:46 but PEI tied it at 11:29 when O’Donnell scored her second of the game and eighth of the tournament. In the shootout, both teams got goals on their first shots, with Sarah McDonnell (Quispamsis, NB/St. Thomas University, CIS) scoring for New Brunswick and O’Donnell finding the back of the net for PEI. Both teams were unsuccessful in their next two shots, setting the stage for O’Donnell’s heroics. Diana Benell (Webster Cove, PEI/Cornwall, IWHL)) made 33 saves for the win in net. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
