2011 World Sport School Challenge

Slovakia 5 - Shattuck-St. Mary's 7

FEJES’ THREE POINTS LEAD SHATTUCK TO GOLD MEDAL GAME

CALGARY, Alta. – Hunter Fejes scored once and added two assists and Noah Henry, Zach Stepan and Tyler Vesel added a goal and helper apiece as Shattuck-St. Mary’s advanced to the gold medal game at the 2011 World Sport School Challenge with a 7-5 win over Slovakia on Friday afternoon.

It’s the second time Shattuck has beaten Slovakia in four days – it scored a 9-3 preliminary round win on Tuesday – and means the Faribault, Minn., school will go for gold on Saturday afternoon (3 p.m. MT) against the winner of the late semifinal between Finland and the Edge School.

Shattuck dominated the opening minutes of the first period, scoring twice before the game was five minutes old to take an early lead, although goals 94 seconds apart from Dominik Rehak and Matej Paulovic brought the Slovakians back to even at 2-2.

Stepan stopped the Slovakian momentum, scoring shorthanded late in the period to send Shattuck to the dressing room up 3-2 after 20 minutes.

That goal sparked Shattuck in the second period, as the Sabres scored four times in the first 16:06 of the frame – Vesel, Henry, Fejes and Carter Lukenda did the damage – to open up a 7-2 lead before Robert Lantosi scored late in the period to make it 7-3 after two.

Paulovic and David Soltes scored in the third to make the final score respectable, but Slovakia will have to settle for playing for bronze on Saturday afternoon (noon MT) against the loser of Friday’s late semifinal.
