WEYBURN, Sask. – The excitement and activity in Weyburn, Sask., has been building and the community is eager for the launch of the 2016 Esso Cup this Sunday.

Six teams – including the host Weyburn Gold Wings – have travelled to the south Saskatchewan community to compete in Canada’s National Female Midget Championship.

“Weyburn has really come together – from volunteers to local businesses – to make this a spectacular event for the six teams who will be going for gold, and the fans who have travelled here to cheer them on,” said Dale Renz, co-chair of the 2016 Esso Cup host committee. “We’re ready for Sunday’s official puck-drop to open a great week of fun and exciting hockey in our community.”

In addition to the Gold Wings, teams representing the Atlantic provinces (Metro Boston Pizza out of Halifax), Quebec (Express du Richelieu), Ontario (Brantford Ice Cats), the West (Saskatoon Stars), and the Pacific region (Rocky Mountain Raiders from Alberta) are all lacing them up at Crescent Point Place during five days of round-robin play with the goal of playing in the gold-medal game on Saturday, April 23 – broadcast nationally on TSN and RDS.

Isobel Gathorne-Hardy Award

Hockey Canada has worked with long-time partner Esso to ensure the Esso Cup is a celebration of female hockey excellence.

As part of this year’s award banquet, former Weyburn Gold Wing Toni Ross will be honoured with the 2016 Isobel Gathorne-Hardy Award.

The award is bestowed to a nominee who is an active player at any level of the game, who demonstrates leadership and commitment to the game.

Ross, a goaltender with the University of Regina Cougars, is a 2015-16 Canada West First Team All-Star and an Academic All-Canadian who gives back to the game through goaltender instruction academies in Regina and the Cougar Cubs’ hockey program for 3 to 5-year-olds. Ross is also active in the community with work with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay-for-Life, and the Big Sisters program in Regina.
