CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada announced Thursday that Canada’s National Women’s Team will face the United States in a six-game series that will help the team prepare for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

The Canada-United States series starts Saturday, Oct. 12 in Burlington, Vt., with the first game in Canada taking place Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Centre d’Excellence Sports Rousseau in Boisbriand, Que. Details of the other two games in Canada along with ticket information will be announced this Fall.

“The rivalry between Canada’s National Women’s Team and the U.S. Women’s National Team is one of the most exciting and intense in hockey,” Hockey Canada’s chief operating officer Scott Smith said. “We look forward to travelling south of the border to take on our talented American competitors, and welcoming both the U.S. team and our fans to the province of Quebec for some of the best women’s hockey in the world.”

The six-game series against the United States is part of a busy 2013-14 schedule for Canada’s National Women’s Team, which also includes the Icebreaker Tournament featuring three Alberta Midget Hockey League teams Thursday, Sept. 19 to Sunday, Sept. 22 at Hockey Canada’s home arena the Markin MacPhail Centre, more than 30 games against AMHL teams across the province and the 2013 4 Nations Cup, taking place Tuesday, Nov. 5 to Saturday, Nov. 9 in Lake Placid, N.Y.

To kick off its 2013-14 schedule, Canada travelled to Sochi, Russia in late August to play two exhibition games against the Olympic host country at Shayba Arena. Canada defeated Russia 6-1 on Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Canada’s next game is at 8:30 p.m. MT on Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Canada Olympic Park, against the AMHL’s Calgary Flames as part of the Icebreaker Tournament.

Tickets to the Icebreaker Tournament that takes place Sept. 19-22 are $5 each for a day pass or $15 apiece for a full event pass, which provides access to all eight games over four days. Tickets are available at the door only.

Single-game tickets to the National Women’s Team Midget Series at the Markin MacPhail Centre throughout the 2013-14 season cost $5 each, with free access for children under 12 years old who are wearing their hockey team’s jersey. In total, the 27 players centralized with Canada’s National Women’s Team will play close to 50 games in preparation for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, which take place Feb. 8-20 in Sochi, Russia.

During the 2009-10 season, Canada’s National Women’s Team played 30 games against AMHL teams in preparation for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C. Canada also played a six-game series against the United States during that season to help both teams prepare for Vancouver 2010, where Canada won its third straight Olympic gold medal.

Canada’s National Women’s Team centralization roster includes three goaltenders, nine defencemen and 15 forwards, as well as 13 gold medallists from the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C. Twenty-two of the centralized players also claimed the silver medal at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship this past April in Ottawa, Ont.
